Week 1: 18th - 24th November, 2011

Friday 18th

Day one has finally arrived! I woke feeling excited and nervous of what today would bring. Anybody could ask me to do anything and I would have to. However, the morning and afternoon went with out any opportunities being placed in front of me, which was very disappointing on day one. Later, In the evening I went to my regular fencing training session, yes I know very middle class. In our 2 hours session I had managed to say YES to a whole number of things. Firstly I said YES to the Christmas meal & doing training on a Wednesday and a Friday, not such a big deal as I was probs going to say yes anyway. Then my coach was chatting to me and asked if I wanted to come to the University photography session next Tuesday. This then lead to cooking for both my coaches one weekend. Looks like next week is going to get busy!

Saturday 19th

Morning started with agreeing to do a library session with my house mate... YAY! Eventually returning home at 5pm, things started to pick up. I agree to go with all my house mates to see the cities Christmas lights being turned on, which consisted of Santa, Rudolf, Elves and some dodge dancing and singing! The fireworks and fake snow made up for it though!

Once home I received a text from my best mate at uni to go to The Union for a game of Touchcup, a drinking game that can be very messy! When I arrive at The Union only a small number of our mates had turned up, so we decided to ditch touchcup and just have a catch up. After a few drinks in us my mate asked if I wanted to go to Babylon (An awsome 90's nightclub)... how could I refuse! This lead to more drinking and bring out the old 90's dance routines that should have stayed in the 90's. In queueing for the bar I managed to get chatted up on all sides. To my right a boy was declaring I was the most 'beautiful girl he had seen', to my left a spanard in a lab coat and glittery wig told me I dance pretty sexy for a white girl... and behind a very persistent touchy-feely guy that won't get the hint after elbowing him numerous times. Once we had our drinks we fled and left them queueing at the bar. We spent the rest of the evening dancing with some of our friends on rugby and at some point I acquired a glitter union jack hat... probs from a club rep selling them!

In Babylon

Around 2am we decided to call it a night and go home. However, my friend wasn't up for sleeping on her own tonight. So after asking me if I was up for staying round we headed to hers for super-noodles and bed.

Sunday 20th

This afternoon I had agreed to go for lunch with my friend, who has gone to Babylon last night with me. In our partly hungover state, we dragged ourselves to a very atmospheric little restaurant known as Belle Isle. We decided it was not to early to get on the cocktails and resulted in us having a very bright 'Blue Hawaiian'. The food here is amazing too, its all so tantalizing, aromatic and fresh. I had the Alabama Hotpot which was the best cooked pork I've had in a long time! Defiantly will be coming back again.

The Blue Hawaiian

Unfortunately no opportunities to say YES came around for the rest of the day.

Monday 21st

Most of the day was spent doing uni work or being in lectures. Therefore the only opportunities that arose were saying yes to reading up on the Late Quaternary Period for my Environmental Reconstruction Course work and being asked if I wanted a Starbucks Hot Chocolate.

Tuesday 22nd

My first chance to say YES today came in the form of a request from one of our lecturers. During climatology our lecturer asked us to watch 'The Great Global Warming Swindle', which he said appeared to be very convincing. However, he wanted us to use our knowledge gained from his module to find the flaws in their arguments. Obviously this is not at all nerdy!
The next chance came in my Finland meeting. After discussing kit for Arctic Finland, we were asked if we wanted to go to Weatherspoons to talk with 3rd years who had gone the year before. On arrival at Spoons we realised that it was steak night. To which a mate of mine turned round and asks if I want to get one. Errr YES? We talked to the 3rd years about Finland while munching on steak and found the we need to take Bikinis... not the first thing I would have though of taking to the Arctic... but apparently there are saunas!
After scoffing down the steak, I had to dash to Photography at the Union. I had promised my fencing coach I would go last Friday. When I turned up there was a tutorial about Urban Photography going on. Knowing near enough nothing about photography or urban photography I found it quite interesting. A short clip on youtube was shown to give a brief introduction to Urban Photography.

We were also told about the laws of taking Photography on the streets, the theory of 3rds and that we should read Henri Cartier-Bression's book 'The Decisive Moment'. Really glad I went as I was told how I could use my camera better, which will be useful in Finland.

Wednesday 23rd

Tonight I had agreed to go on a dance social, as my best mate is the social sec for dance. Unfortunately, I had to fencing the University of London today and train until 10pm! None the less I had said YES, so nothing was going to stop me going... no matter how shattered I was! The theme for the social was 'Cops and Robbers', all freshers were robbers and everyone else a cop. Being a second year my costume consisted of a tight fitting white shirt, policeman's hat, black shorts, fishnet tights and hand cuffs... this defiantly got the taxi driver talking! I got dropped off outside Highlight, where I joined the dance social. Once inside we cracked out a few moves and did a couple of jager shots with mates on rugby. Then the main lights on the clubs stage came on. The music was turned down slight and a man with a mic was going on about an charity auction! Two other people where stood on stage. One was a blonde girl with a dress on that was most likely meant to be a top. The other was a guy with a ripped shirt on that exposed, what I can only say is a 6-pack that  is caused being so thin! The man with the mic said that by buy one of them tonight in the auction you would get them for 3 hours and can do anything you like with them... oi oi! Bidding began and brilliantly the girl went for £25 and the boy £45, her face was a picture! Anyway, the music got turned up and we spent the rest of the night dancing until the club closed!

The Rules

After re-watching YES Man the other day it is really about time I did this item on my list. I have managed to rope a friend into saying YES to everything for the next two months with me too.It was a mix of I need support doing this and she needed to experience the world a bit more. She will also be writing a blog of her experiences as well, which you can read at http://beckysmagicword.blogspot.com/ We took a couple of hours out of our hectic student life to go for a drink and line out a few conditions.

 1. The word 'No' is band - Alternatives for No can be used

 2. Alternative for No can be used when you have not: done something, got something or do not know   something.

 3. Knowledge of saying YES can not be used for malicious gain

 4. 'Children In Need' is voided from say Yes - They ask you to give every couple of minutes, I would be bankrupt by the end of it!

 5. Must say YES to all Questions, Commands & Statements.

 6. MUST CARRY NOTEBOOK AT ALL TIMES

 7. Must be in possession of a camera at ALL TIMES

 8. Period of 2 months

 9. Starts 12am 18th November 2011 - Ends 12am 19th January

So it all starts tomorrow. I'm excited and nervous for it to beginning. I think the most scariest thing is the lack of control you have. Yet isn't that what its all about, just letting go of why we can't do something and actually getting out there and making something happen. Anyway we'll see what happens to me in the next two months... as anything could!
